Licensing Act review

The Home Office is reviewing the Licensing Act to "overhaul the current licensing regime, in order to give more power to local authorities and police".  The consultation (which closes on 8 September) identifies a number of options for reducing alcohol-related crime. Read more.

 

Review of alcohol taxation and pricing

The government has also announced a review of alcohol taxation and pricing.  The review is being jointly led by the Home Office and the Treasury and will report in the autumn. To contribute to the process, responses are needed before 31 August 2010.  Read more.

Latest crime figures show that victims believe offenders to be under the influence of alcohol in half of all violent incidents. Read more.

 

Future of the NTA and the Alcohol Education & Research Council

The government has completed a review of arm's-length bodies and has decided that the NTA (National Treatment Agency) will become part of a new Public Health Service.  The AERC (Alcohol Education & Research Council) will no longer be classified as an arm's-length body.  Read more.

 

Government white paper on the future of the NHS

Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley, has outlined the coalition government's proposals for reforming the NHS in England. The proposals will have a substantial impact on all services commissioned and/or provided by the NHS - including alcohol services. Read more.

Alcohol Awareness Week 2010: 18-24 October

Alcohol Awareness Week 2010 will run from Monday 18 to Sunday 24 October 2010 in England and Wales. The focus of the week for this year will be alcohol and childhood which encompasses both the impact of alcohol use by young people, and the impact on young people of alcohol misuse in the home environment. The week provides an opportunity to raise awareness of all alcohol misuse issues and to highlight current public policy as well as the work of alcohol treatment service-providers across England and Wales.  More details about Alcohol Awareness Week will be available towards the end of August on the Alcohol Concern website.

 

Alcohol Concern's Annual Conference - 2 November 2010

Generation alcohol: is drinking damaging childhood? Alcohol Concern's Annual Conference and AGM will take place on Tuesday 2 November in London.  Youth drinking and the generational impact of parental drinking are two ongoing issues of concern to treatment providers, politicians and the public. Alcohol Concern’s flagship event of the year will hear from academics, experts and politicians on what needs to be done to protect children from alcohol harm.  Find out further details and book your place now!

 
 
New treatment report shows a 24% rise in levels of moderate and severe alcohol dependency in England

Embrace: Opening the can of worms - safely   

Embrace, the Alcohol Concern project on children, families and domestic abuse, is continuing to run its one-day training sessions in the nine English regions. The course is for adult alcohol services looking to ‘think family’ and ‘think safety’ in their everyday work. The next session will be held in Southampton on 15 September. Fuelling the problem? The sale of alcohol at petrol stations in Wales

'Fuelling the problem?' looks at the practical difficulties of implementing a ban on these sales, and considers alternative or complimentary measures, such as the American model of ‘open container’ legislation. Youth policy project

Coming up to the completion of the project’s first year, the Youth Policy team is busy writing a report that will focus on young people’s access to support. The document is due in the autumn and will explore issues around IBA and young people, non-alcohol specialist involvement and access to support. It will also look at the government’s approach to dealing with young people’s alcohol consumption. Find out more about Alcohol Concern's Youth policy project.
