The BYC '60 years of youth culture' documentary team have swung into action, interviewing prominent figures that have been involved with BYC during our 60 years. Trekking across London from Bexley to Edmonton the team have interviewed MPs, newsreaders, journalists and young people from around the UK!

Screenings of the film will kick off with the premiere in a central London cinema later this summer.  Keep an eye on your TV and computer screens for the general release later this year - expect to be inspired by the positive impact of young people in the UK over the last 60 years!

 2. Happy Birthday Scottish Youth Parliament!

Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) has been celebrating 10 years of representing young people in Scotland.

Last week SYP invited BYC Chief Executive, James, to take part in the celebrations in Edinburgh.  James was also invited to the Annual General Meeting where the new Chair was elected - Derek Couper, aged 18 from Lingston.

James met with SYMP’s (Scottish Youth Member of Parliament), listened to their panel debate on Scottish independence and presented them with a special birthday cake! He then joined campaigners for a march on climate change along the Royal Mile to the Scottish Parliament.

James says: “Congratulations to SYP on your fantastic organisation of an action packed weekend. It was great to join in the march and witness the support from members of the public who applauded young people enroute.”

Emily, BYC Chair says: “As we are both youth-led organisations we share a common purpose and feel we have a special relationship – Happy Birthday SYP from your friends at BYC.”

BYC works in partnership with SYP in Scotland on two projects – Young Ambassadors which recruits and sends young people overseas to represent the UK and the upcoming BYC Conventions.  If you would like to know more about SYP and get involved with campaigns, elections and forums click here.

A big thank you if you took part in the online surveys about young people and governance that BYC ran earlier this year on behalf of Participation Works. We have just published a report of the findings which is available to download from the Participation Works website.

 4. Good 4 the Hood - make a difference to where you live

Do something good 4 your hood and become a TV star!

MTV, in partnership with the Home Office, have launched Good 4 the Hood, a competition to inspire young people to do something positive in their community. The winning group of friends will get to star in their own four part mini series on MTV.

Anyone interested should visit the MTV site and tell us what they do or would like to do, that is ‘Good 4 The Hood’ and will make a difference in their community to tackle issues including drugs, anti-social behaviour and knife crime.

Entry closes on 12th July, when the top entries will be short listed. Viewers will then be invited to visit the site again and vote for their favourite.

The winning idea will be brought to life through four, three-minute reality style episodes shown on MTV during September and October!
